Sun men on stage at VLV

The final day of Viva Las Vegas featured four guys who recorded for Sun in the fifties, all of whom gave a good account of themselves. First on was Narvel Felts, who had later success with country flavoured revivals. Beginning with Pink And Black he included two songs he recorded in 1957, My Babe and Kiss Me Baby, plus My Prayer and Kiss Me Baby. Carl Mann sat for his short set but proved to be a good guitarist as he ran through Ubangi Stomp, Don't Matter To Me, Maybe Baby, from a new album, brief snippets of Its Alright Mama and Blue Suede Shoes, and his biggest hits Pretend and Mona Lisa.
The pace hotted up with Sonny Burgess, who was joined on stage by Pacer Bobby Crawford on drums and Ian Clarkson of the Jive Aces on trumpet. Numbers included We Want To Boogie, Ain't Got A Thing, Frogman Henry's Ain't Got No Home, My Bucket's Got. A Hole In It and Red Headed Mama. Good stuff. Finally it was Hayden Thompson, who was very professional on I Get The Blues, Whatcha Gonna Do, Fairlane Rock and Rockabilly Girl. He ended with You Are My Sunshine, in which he name checked his good friend John Howard. The four Sun men  finished with Shake Rattle and roll on stage together to a great reception.
Earlier in the evening there was an excellent cabaret style show featuring the Jive Aces and a song and dance troupe called the Satin Dollz, during which Don Hill, original sax player with the Treniers, now aged 92, did a sax solo.
It was off to L A next morning, stopping off at Peggy Sue's Diner for lunch, and a trip to Santa Monica in the evening. The saga continues.
Nick Cobban.
